FSUI Calls for Action to Protect Indian Crew Following Drone Attack on Baryon

Sep 10, 2026 08:41

The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) is pressing Indian authorities to take urgent action to ensure the safety of 23 Indian crew members aboard the vessel 'Baryon', which was subjected to a drone attack on September 2 while sailing from Russia to Karachi. The strike, which occurred on the starboard side, ignited a small fire in the accommodation area, and a second drone was also noted in the nearby surroundings. Thankfully, the crew successfully extinguished the fire, enabling the 'Baryon' to continue its journey under its own power, albeit with considerable damage to the living quarters. Remarkably, all 23 crew members were reported safe. On September 10, the ship successfully transited the Bosphorus Strait while heading toward Icdas. In light of these events, the FSUI has called upon India's Directorate General of Shipping, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to assess the crew's condition and ensure their safety. Furthermore, the union has advocated for enhanced governmental measures to protect Indian seafarers operating in areas deemed to be at war risk. They have also requested the assurance that affected seafarers receive appropriate High Risk Area (HRA) compensation and for these concerns to be escalated to relevant authorities.
