Hanjin Shipping Secures Relief as More Vessels Set to Unload at Long Beach Port
In a positive turn of events for Hanjin Shipping Co., the struggling South Korean container line announced on Monday that additional vessels will soon begin unloading cargo at the Long Beach port in California. This announcement follows a U.S. court's decision on Friday, which granted the company bankruptcy protection, alleviating a significant gridlock that had been hampering the flow of goods. Currently, three more Hanjin vessels are poised to offload their freight after the Hanjin Greece completes its discharge, which is scheduled for early September 12 local time. Port officials revealed that the Hanjin Greece started unloading its cargo at 8 a.m. local time on Sunday, with the Hanjin Gdynia set to follow suit. According to Noel Hacegaba, chief commercial officer of the Port of Long Beach, the Hanjin Greece's cargo includes a wide array of items ranging from electronics to furniture and footwear — essential products that consumers are keen to find in stores as the holiday season approaches. This development comes after Hanjin Shipping faced considerable disruption to the global supply chain for over a week since filing for court receivership on August 31. The company received a vital boost recently when its largest shareholder, Korean Air Lines Co., pledged a financial injection of 60 billion won (approximately $54 million) to assist with port handling fees.
