NYK Launches Direct Shipping Service to Subic Bay Starting November 22
In a significant development for maritime logistics, Japan’s Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line is set to debut a direct shipping route from Subic Bay Freeport to key ports in Japan and Singapore on November 22. This initiative, announced by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), follows the recent designation of Subic as an extension of the Port of Manila under Executive Order 172, further enhancing its appeal to global shippers. SBMA Chair Roberto V. Garcia highlighted that the launch of NYK's new routes aims to provide an efficient alternative to the congested Manila ports. "The opening of NYK’s direct routes to Subic is intended to provide an alternative solution to the port congestion in Manila," Garcia stated, emphasizing the collaboration with NYK to address the ongoing issues affecting port operations in the capital region. The agreement for the new service was finalized last month between SBMA representatives and NYK leadership, including Capt. Chak Kwok Wai, chair and managing director of the NYK Group, along with Ian T. Maambong, NYK's sales manager for exports, Dan Florentino, COO of the Transnational Diversified Group, and Tony Ramos from the Subic Bay International Terminal Corp. Under the newly established service, NYK will facilitate direct shipping from Japan to Subic and extend its reach from Subic to Singapore, providing crucial discharge and loading options for urgent cargoes. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the time vessels spend at Manila ports, addressing critical logistical challenges. To kick off the new service, NYK's MV Jakarta Tower, with a capacity of 2,300 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), is scheduled for its inaugural call at the Port of Subic on November 22, marking an exciting new chapter in the region's shipping and logistics landscape.
