Bulk Carrier and Chinese Fishing Vessel Collide in Singapore Strait

Sep 24, 2026 15:23

On September 20, 2026, a notable maritime accident occurred in the Bay of Bengal within the Singapore Strait, involving the bulk carrier 'First Margaux' and the Chinese fishing vessel 'Lu Qing Yuan Yu 108' (IMO: 8688472). The incident unfolded as both vessels were navigating westward after departing from their respective anchorages east of Singapore. The 'First Margaux' was reportedly traveling at a speed of three knots faster than the fishing vessel when it attempted to pass, ultimately colliding with the fishing boat from behind. The crash occurred on the starboard side of the 'Lu Qing Yuan Yu 108', causing significant tilt and instability. Navigational protocols were seemingly mishandled, as the 'First Margaux' was operating within the designated traffic separation scheme and was deemed the overtaking vessel. However, its maneuverability was compromised due to a third vessel, the tanker 'Gas Iris', which was entering the same lane. Although the bulk carrier could have potentially avoided the collision by slightly turning to port, the fishing vessel was also critiqued for not maintaining proper watchkeeping, despite having time for evasive maneuvers. Following the collision, the 'Lu Qing Yuan Yu 108' was towed to the Raffles reserve anchorage to evaluate any damage sustained during the incident. Some crew members remained aboard to assist in the towage, while the Singapore Civil Defence Force facilitated the safe disembarkation of the remaining crew. Additionally, the maritime authorities issued navigational warnings to ensure the area remained clear during the operation, with an authority vessel escorting the fishing vessel into port. Meanwhile, the 'First Margaux' continued westbound at a reduced speed for approximately two hours before it ceased navigation, circled back, and anchored in the vicinity. An investigation into the collision has been initiated by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
