Piracy Resurgence: Bulk Carrier 'Glamor' Targeted by Somali Pirates in Gulf of Aden

Sep 11, 2026 19:13

In a concerning incident on September 10, 2026, the bulk carrier 'Glamor', sailing from Salalah to Djibouti, became the target of a hijacking attempt by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, near the Yemeni coast. The vessel was approached approximately 98 nautical miles southwest of Al Mukalla at around 9 a.m. When pirates in a skiff neared the ship, the crew quickly retreated to the vessel's citadel, strengthening their defensive position. Despite the attackers boarding the ship, they ultimately failed to seize control and abandoned their efforts, allowing the 'Glamor' to carry on with its journey. Thankfully, all crew members were reported safe following the incident. This attempted hijacking reflects a troubling trend indicating that Somali pirate factions may be regaining their previous capabilities to target commercial shipping at greater distances from land. Notably, this encounter marked the first reported piracy case since August 20 and was the 25th ship hijacking incident globally since the beginning of 2026. The 'Glamor' has primarily been engaged in operations out of Djibouti, but details regarding the identity of the attackers or their affiliations remain unclear. Following the incident, ships and aircraft from the European Union's Operation Atalanta counter-piracy task force initiated an investigation in the region, which is not under the control of the Iran-backed Houthi movement.
