M/V Jacuar Runs Aground After Water Ingress, Crew Rescued by Navy
On September 17, 2026, the freighter 'Jacuar' experienced a critical emergency after suffering water ingress in its engine room and was subsequently run aground. Fortunately, the Navy successfully rescued all 18 crew members aboard. The vessel, owned by Brothers Maritime and operated by Sonar Shipping from Mersin, was on a voyage from Nacala, Mozambique, to Adabiye, Egypt, carrying a hefty cargo of 7,007.73 tonnes. The crew, consisting of Indian, Syrian, and Egyptian nationals, attempted to repair a crack in one of the cargo holds with the help of a diver. Although they managed to temporarily reduce the water inflow, the situation deteriorated rapidly as the crack widened and the inflow increased dramatically. The captain promptly informed the ship's owner and the Port of Mogadishu requesting urgent assistance. Unfortunately, entrance to the port was denied due to security concerns. After careful consideration, the captain opted to beach the vessel in a safer region around 12:30 a.m., prioritizing the safety of the crew, ship, and cargo. The following morning, the Coast Guard arrived to assess the situation and facilitate evacuation procedures. Most of the crew members were successfully evacuated; however, the captain, chief engineer, chief officer, electrician, and welder stayed onboard to manage safety protocols and legal matters. These personnel remain on the ship to this day. The relevant maritime authority has confirmed that salvage operations have commenced. The last recorded coordinates of the vessel were 02Β° 07' N 045Β° 31' E. Prior to this incident, 'Jacuar' had previously docked at several regional ports, including Al Adabiyah, Jeddah, and Djibouti. The freighter has a history of compliance issues, having been detained in Jordan in September 2024 and again in April 2025. During an inspection in December 2025 by Egyptian port-state-control authorities, various deficiencies were noted, including issues related to deck corrosion and engine-room gauges.
