Drone Assault Targets Russian Vessel 'Lady Mariia' Off Crete

Sep 09, 2026 12:47

On September 6, 2026, the Russian cargo ship 'Lady Mariia' came under fire from multiple drones while navigating the waters west of Crete, situated north of Libya. The vessel was en route from Oran to Syria at the time of the assault. At approximately 7:51 p.m. UTC on September 5, the 'Lady Mariia' was traveling at a speed of 9.4 knots on a course of 106.2° through the central Mediterranean when the attack occurred in the eastern area between Libya and Crete. The drones released a dozen bombs that struck various parts of the ship, including its deck, cranes, and funnels, resulting in a small fire. While the bombs inflicted damage on the deck handling equipment and the ship's control area, they were not powerful enough to breach the hull below deck or threaten to sink the vessel. The impacts predominantly targeted the deck and appendages, indicating a strategic operation aimed at crippling the ship's cargo-handling capabilities or damaging its military cargo, rather than outright destruction. Following the incident, the 'Lady Mariia' anchored at Port Said on September 8 at 9:53 p.m. in coordinates 31° 41' N 032° 08' E. This vessel has been monitored internationally due to its appearance on various sanctions lists. The U.S. previously sanctioned it under its former name, 'Stella-Maria,' due to its connections with the Russian shipping entity Transmorflot. On May 23, 2026, Ukraine also classified the ship as illegal, tracking it closely as a vital asset transporting heavy weaponry between Tartus and Novorossiysk, Russia. Although it was rumored that the ship was carrying Iranian weapons and armored vehicles to be delivered to Russian forces, such claims remain unverified. Additionally, there has been no public acknowledgment from Ukrainian authorities regarding their involvement in the attack, and no Russian Navy vessels were present to assist the 'Lady Mariia.' The current status of the ship, including its capacity to proceed toward Syria or seek shelter at another port, remains uncertain.
