UK Unveils Comprehensive Sanctions Against Russian Shipping and Financial Sectors

Aug 07, 2026 10:42

In a decisive move, the United Kingdom has broadened its sanctions against Russia, introducing a robust new package that specifically targets sectors including shipping, banking, and industrial entities. Announced on August 6 by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, this latest round consists of 19 new designations, impacting ships, companies, banks, and individuals as part of the UK's ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression. Prominent among the new sanctions is the maritime designation of the vessel 'Arctic Express' (IMO: 9333591), identified as having transported liquefied natural gas from Russia to various third-party nations. The 'Arctic Express,' currently believed to be sailing under the Russian flag, is operated by SMP Tech Management LLP, which has come under scrutiny due to its involvement. Furthermore, Mumbai-based Frion Ship Management LLP has also been designated, accused of facilitating the transition of the 'Arctic Express' to Russian control. As a result, the company now faces severe measures including asset freezes, restrictions on trust services, director disqualifications, and transport sanctions. The UK's sanctions extend to five oil tankers implicated in the transport of Russian crude oil or petroleum products to international destinations. These vessels include: - 'Perseas' (IMO: 9326811), reportedly sailing under the San Marino flag. - 'Torvian' (IMO: 9470131), thought to be registered in Barbados. - 'Asteras' (IMO: 9402263), also believed to be registered in Palau. - 'Visund' (IMO: 9378864), registered in Palau. - 'Zenturo' (IMO: 9346885), reportedly registered in Barbados. Due to the UK's specified shipping sanctions, these vessels are now barred from UK ports, may be subject to detention, cannot be chartered or operated by UK entities, and face a wide range of restrictions affecting maritime services such as chartering, brokering, technical assistance, financial services, and crew services. The sanctions package further includes Northern Engineering LLC, a key player in Russia’s vital energy sector, along with four industrial firms accused of supplying goods or technology that support Russia's ongoing war efforts. Additionally, five Russian financial institutions, including Ozon Bank and the Russian Export-Import Bank, will also experience asset freezes and strict correspondent banking limitations. This latest round of sanctions reiterates the UK government’s commitment to disrupting the complex maritime networks that enable Russian energy exports. Following the invasion of Ukraine, London has increasingly deployed shipping-targeted sanctions, aiming to penalize vessels, operators, and service providers engaged in the transportation of Russian oil and LNG to global markets.
