Container Ship 'Nawata Bhum' Runs Aground Near Hooghly Point

Aug 17, 2026 12:50

On August 12, 2026, at approximately 2 p.m. local time, the container ship 'Nawata Bhum', which was traveling from Port Klang bound for Myasa Prasad Mokerjee Port in Kolkata, encountered a severe steering gear failure. The vessel was carrying 483 containers when it lost control while navigating a sharp bend in the Hooghly River during a turbulent high tide, influenced by the new moon phase. This malfunction caused the ship to veer off course, leading it to crash into the riverbank close to the Nurpur Ferry Ghat in the Diamond Harbour region of South 24 Parganas district, located roughly 50 kilometers south of Kolkata. This stretch of the river, particularly near Hooghly Point, is known for its challenging navigation conditions. The ship's captain acted quickly, sounding the horn repeatedly to alert nearby onlookers and ferry operators as it headed toward the embankment. Ultimately, the vessel became lodged in the riverbank, damaging both the embankment and a nearby road. The onboard pilot promptly contacted the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA), reporting the incident. In response, SMPA pilots boarded 'Nawata Bhum' to assist in the situation. Thanks to the efforts of two tugs, the ship was successfully floated free around 10:30 p.m. during the next high tide. Fortunately, the hull sustained no damage, allowing the vessel to proceed to Kolkata under tow. By August 13, the 'Nawata Bhum' was moored for further investigations at coordinates 22° 12' N 088° 09' E, with no harm found to the cargo. The following day, August 14, the ship successfully berthed in Kolkata.
