On September 14, the specialized research vessel 'Optimus Prime' commenced its mission to locate 14 individuals who remain unaccounted for following the tragic sinking of the high-speed passenger ferry 'Fylo Jet' (IMO: 8962034) near Kyrenia. This advanced vessel has initiated underwater search and assessment operations at the site of the wreck. Equipped for deep-sea exploration, 'Optimus Prime' is capable of maintaining an accurate position in open waters while utilizing remotely operated underwater vehicles, thus enabling divers to access previously unreachable sections of the wreck. The current operation aims to strengthen search efforts both around the wreckage and in deeper waters, leveraging the specialized equipment onboard. Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Ataoğlu visited the vessel to observe the ongoing operations firsthand. Rescue efforts continue relentlessly, with authorities deploying all available resources to locate the missing individuals. 'Optimus Prime' allows investigators to conduct meticulous inspections of the wreck's interior and explore areas that were once thought to be inaccessible. After the incident, which saw the ferry sink while carrying a total of 267 passengers and crew, 239 individuals were rescued, but unfortunately, 14 lost their lives, and 14 others are still missing. The wreck is situated at a depth of approximately 554 meters, complicating the recovery efforts but highlighting the urgent need for a thorough search.

On March 14, 2018, the exploration vessel 'Ocean Investigator' docked at the Limassol East Container Terminal amidst ongoing political tensions with Turkey regarding gas exploration rights in the Mediterranean Sea. The ship is set to engage in hydrocarbon exploration within Block 10 of Cyprus' exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Following closely behind, the 'Med Surveyor' is expected to arrive on March 15. ExxonMobil has outlined plans to conduct exploration activities, paving the way for possible drilling operations in the latter half of the year. However, Turkey has previously hampered similar initiatives by Italian energy company Eni, asserting that Turkish Cypriots in the unrecognized enclave in northern Cyprus should have immediate access to revenue from these resources. On March 14, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized that any gas exploration off the coast of Cyprus should not proceed without the participation of the Turkish Cypriot community. Currently, 'Ocean Investigator' is slated to remain in Limassol until March 24 to facilitate the loading of necessary equipment, though early departure is a possibility contingent on the progress of preparations.
