Detained Vessel 'Palaz' Faces Serious Safety Violations in Rethymnon
On August 6, 2026, the merchant ship 'Palaz' was detained in Rethymnon, Greece, due to a staggering 24 deficiencies categorized as critical and enforceable grounds for detention. The violations included unacceptable labour conditions, such as insufficient sanitary facilities and inadequate sleeping arrangements for crew members. Furthermore, essential personal protective equipment was found lacking, along with serious electrical and lighting issues in working spaces. Significant fire safety concerns were flagged, particularly regarding inoperative fixed fire extinguishing installations and a non-compliant fire detection and alarm system. Additionally, the ship did not have an updated fire control plan, and the fire pump alongside its associated pipes were deemed not up to standard. Problems were also noted with fire doors and the structural integrity of fire prevention measures. Water tightness also posed a challenge as various covers, railings, and doors aboard the vessel were not properly maintained. The integrity of the windows, sidescuttles, and deadlights was also in question. Emergency systems were found lacking: the muster list was incomplete, and there was a lack of control over both fire drills and abandon ship procedures. Moreover, the auxiliary machinery did not meet required standards, and pollution prevention measures appeared compromised, notably, the Ballast Water Management System was malfunctioning, and there was a lack of familiarity in garbage handling protocols. Also highlighted were the deficiencies in life-saving appliances, specifically the immersion suits, as well as issues surrounding the ISM certification. After rectifying the noted deficiencies, the 'Palaz' was released from detention on September 3 and subsequently departed for the shipyard area in Yalova. This incident emphasizes the crucial need for rigorous adherence to safety regulations within maritime operations.
