Launched in April 2026, the state-of-the-art vessel 'Scharhörn' is currently grappling with ongoing technical difficulties that are hindering its full operational capabilities. The German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) has reported that the ship’s intricate systems, including its liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines, continue to require fine-tuning. These adjustments have been necessary since the ship's commissioning just four months ago, leaving the 'Scharhörn' unable to function as originally envisioned. As a result, it has not yet been integrated into the maritime emergency response framework, according to the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies located in Cuxhaven. In light of this, the federal government has taken steps to charter additional emergency tugs and has repurposed an oil spill response vessel, as the 'Scharhörn' remains restricted to limited emergency operations. Further testing is slated for release in the 34th week, which is expected to prepare the vessel for deployment. However, due to a lack of available space caused by changes to construction plans, the 'Scharhörn' does not yet have a permanent docking location in Kiel and is temporarily stationed at Kiel East Bank Port, as the buoy depot in Kiel-Holtenau is too small to accommodate the vessel.
