Major Allision Incident in Chittagong: 'Sea Spike' and 'Sun Shine' Collide

Aug 17, 2026 13:34

On August 14, 2026, at around 12:25 p.m., a significant maritime incident occurred in Chittagong when the oil tanker 'Sea Spike' lost control amid strong tidal currents, leading to an allision with the anchored bulk carrier 'Sun Shine' (IMO: 9405435). The 'Sea Spike' was transporting a substantial 33,000 metric tons of diesel, while the 'Sun Shine' was moored with 52,000 tonnes of imported wheat at position 22° 17' N 091° 43' E. Fortunately, the collision did not result in any oil spill, as the cargo tanks of the 'Sea Spike' remained undamaged. However, the impact did create a one-square-meter crack in the port side of the tanker's engine room. This breach allowed some water ingress, leading to a temporary loss of power; emergency batteries, however, ensured that the vessel's VHF communication systems remained operational. To prevent further issues, the crew of the 'Sea Spike' swiftly released 10 shackles of anchor cable, allowing the vessel to safely float even at low tide. The tanker was eventually repositioned to coordinates 22° 18' N 091° 44' E. In response to the incident, the Chattogram Port Authority dispatched the tug 'Kandari 8' (IMO: 9094353) for rescue and logistical support. The Bangladesh Coast Guard was alerted through the Chattogram Port Authority’s Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) and quickly mobilized their rescue team under Operation 'Surokkha'. Utilizing the Coast Guard vessel BCGS 'Sonadia' (MMSI: 405000208), the tug BCGT 'Promotto' (IMO: 9868998), and a high-speed patrol boat, they conducted emergency containment and rescue operations. The 'Sonadia' engaged with the damaged tanker to ensure ongoing monitoring and rapid response capabilities. Authorities instructed the shipping agent to prioritize the unloading of fuel from the 'Sea Spike' and directed a salvage company to commence repairs on the hull breach. The shipping agent, Pride Shipping, facilitated the repairs while maintaining constant communication with the ship's master. Remarkably, shipping traffic in the port channel was not disrupted by the incident, and the 'Sun Shine', sustaining only minor damage, was relocated from the site later that day. A formal inquiry has been initiated to investigate the precise circumstances surrounding the allision, while updates and visual reports can be accessed through various news outlets including Business Times and bdnews24.
