The tanker 'Sibu 1', which was sanctioned by the United States in December 2025 for its suspected role in a fleet facilitating Iranian petroleum products to bypass U.S. sanctions, has recently made headlines following its hijacking off the coast of Yemen. After the hijacking, the vessel was rerouted to Somalia but, surprisingly, was never registered in Eritrea despite claiming to sail under its flag. Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea's Information Minister, declared that the 'Sibu 1' has no ties to Eritrea. In a telling sign of its dubious registration, the International Maritime Organization's database listed the vessel's status as 'False Eritrea', which denotes that its registration is deemed invalid. The last known location of the tanker was reported on August 24, where it was spotted approximately six kilometers off the northeastern coast of Somalia.

In a pressing development, Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has urgently called for the unconditional release of more than 90 seafarers currently held hostage due to a recent surge in piracy in the Gulf of Aden. This alarming situation follows the hijacking of the vessel 'Sibu 1', which has contributed to the ongoing captivity of six vessels by armed pirates in the region. The IMO has reported that these seafarers are enduring significant hardships, faced with uncertainty and threats, while many lack access to basic necessities such as food, fresh water, and medical assistance. In a statement, Secretary-General Dominguez emphasized that no one in the maritime workforce should experience violence or intimidation for simply fulfilling their duties in supporting global trade. The IMO has called upon both flag states and coastal nations to enhance their preparedness for managing security risks, recommending the adoption of Best Management Practices for Maritime Security (BMP Maritime Security) along with other relevant guidelines from the IMO. Furthermore, the IMO underscores the vital need for continued international naval collaboration to safeguard merchant vessels and their crews against piracy threats.

In recent weeks, two alarming piracy events have captured international attention, as each incident involved Indian seafarers. Onboard the cargo vessel 'Sibu 1', a total of 20 crew members, including 16 Indian nationals, one Syrian, one Sudanese, and one Iraqi, are currently reported safe despite the ship being under the control of pirates. This incident, alongside another involving six Indian crew members on the m/v 'Lutuf', brings the total number of Indian seafarers affected to 22. The maritime community remains on high alert regarding these developments off the coast of Somalia.

On August 20, 2026, the tanker 'Sibu 1' was overtaken by six armed assailants approximately 136 nautical miles east of Mukalla, Yemen. The vessel was on a westward course in the Gulf of Aden when it came under threat from an unauthorized ship, which forced it to change direction towards Somalia. In a desperate attempt to signal for help, the crew managed to alter the ship's AIS destination, broadcasting the alarming message: "PIRATE ONBOARD HELP." The 'Sibu 1' is notable for being under U.S. sanctions, as it allegedly operates within an Iranian "shadow fleet" involved in the illicit transportation of petroleum products. This incident marks the second successful hijacking in just four days, following the capture of the cargo vessel 'Lutuf' on August 17, despite challenging conditions brought about by the Southwest monsoon season.
