Safe Evacuation of Crew from SLNC York After Water Ingress Incident

Aug 23, 2026 20:27

On August 18, 2026, the crew aboard the cargo ship 'SLNC York,' which was traveling from Honolulu, underwent a successful evacuation after the vessel experienced significant water ingress in the Pacific Ocean. The incident was caused by a catastrophic failure of the shaft seal. In response to the emergency, the crew and technical personnel acted swiftly to manage the flooding situation. While the vessel maintained stability during the incident, a nearby LPG carrier, 'Pacific Yantai' (IMO: 9739965), which was en route from Balboa, provided immediate assistance. The entire crew was safely transferred to 'Pacific Yantai' as a precautionary measure, ensuring that all crew members were unharmed and accounted for before being transported to Yosu, thanks to the efforts of the Good Samaritan crew. The 'SLNC York,' part of the U.S. Maritime Administration’s Maritime Security Program, was en route to Naha to fulfill Department of Defense sealift requirements during conflicts or national emergencies. Following the crew’s evacuation, the salvage tug 'Koyo Maru' (IMO: 9162148) arrived to assist on August 21, making contact with the deserted 'SLNC York' in the Western Pacific. With favorable weather conditions, 'Koyo Maru' was set to pick up the tow bridle that the crew had left behind before their departure from the ship.
