Incident Involving 'SMF Ixora' and Sungai Johor Bridge Resulting in Minimal Damage
On September 2, 2026, the tanker 'SMF Ixora' collided with the Sungai Johor Bridge, located in Kota Tinggi at kilometre 48.9, while heading westbound along the Penawar-Pasir Gudang route. The accident transpired shortly after the vessel was launched from Benzmark Marine Shipyard. At the time of the incident, a tug boat was deployed to assist and direct the tanker; however, the vessel was unable to be controlled due to the adverse conditions of strong currents and winds that pushed it toward the bridge. Despite the tug's efforts, it lacked the power necessary to prevent the allision. The tanker impacted the bridge around 2:30 p.m. Two additional tugs responded promptly, and by 3:16 p.m., the 'SMF Ixora' was successfully relocated and anchored safely. Fortunately, the bridge sustained only minor damage and was deemed secure for traffic, remaining operational, as confirmed by Senai-Desaru Expressway Berhad (SDEB). Following the incident, SDEB took swift action to conduct thorough inspections and assessments of the bridge's structural integrity to ensure public safety.
