Bute Faces Series of Operational Disruptions on Wemyss Bay-Rothesay Route

Bute, the ferry operating between Wemyss Bay and Rothesay, has encountered a concerning series of operational setbacks over the past few months, leading to multiple sailings being cancelled and rescheduled. The first of these incidents occurred on July 22, when the vessel faced a fuel issue that disrupted its service. Sailings from Rothesay at 10:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., along with departures from Wemyss Bay at 11:15 a.m. and 1:05 p.m., were cancelled due to the situation. Fortunately, after swift action was taken to resolve the fuel issue, the ferry was able to resume operations later in the day, reinstating crossings at 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. from Rothesay, and 3:05 p.m., 5:05 p.m., and 7:05 p.m. from Wemyss Bay.

The operational challenges continued in August when, on the 24th, Bute faced a similar obstacle, this time related to the fast rescue craft onboard. The scheduled 3:00 p.m. sailing from Rothesay and the 4:05 p.m. sailing from Wemyss Bay were cancelled while repairs were carried out. Fortunately, service was resumed by 5:00 p.m. from Rothesay, allowing passengers to continue their travels albeit with a significant delay.

Most recently, on September 6, the ferry encountered a technical issue with its propulsion unit. This led to further cancellations, including the early sailings from both Rothesay and Wemyss Bay throughout the morning and early afternoon. Engineers needed time to conduct a thorough investigation and address the propulsion problem, causing significant disruptions to the schedule. Once the issue was resolved, Bute was able to return to its regular service at the 4:00 p.m. departure from Rothesay.

The accumulation of these incidents has raised concerns among passengers and operators alike regarding the reliability of the Bute. As authorities work to ensure the stability and efficiency of the Wemyss Bay-Rothesay route, ongoing vigilance and maintenance will be crucial to prevent future disruptions and enhance passenger confidence.
