Euroleader: A Journey through Turbulence on the High Seas

The maritime operations of the vessel Euroleader have taken a dramatic turn in recent months, particularly highlighted by its encounters with both mechanical failures and aerial assaults. On January 7, 2026, the vessel faced a perilous situation when it was struck by a drone while navigating the Black Sea, approximately 30 nautical miles off the coast of Turkey. The attack, identified as a UAV and drone strike, caused significant damage to the upper works of the ship, specifically impacting the engine room area. Thankfully, the 25 crew members aboard remained unharmed, and no pollution was reported as a result of the incident. Despite the challenges, the vessel managed to change course swiftly and reached safety, arriving off the coast of Inebolu under its own power. Turkish Coastguard units were dispatched to provide support as local officials began investigating the incident to determine the source of the attack. Although Ukraine's armed forces were active in the region, they did not claim responsibility for the assault on the Euroleader.

Fast forward a few months, the vessel had undergone necessary repairs and resumed its operations, leaving Tuzla on March 24, 2026. However, the challenges persisted as Euroleader encountered engine failure while transiting the Çanakkale Strait off the notable 1915 Çanakkale Bridge. The incident occurred on April 5, leading to a swift response from the Çanakkale Ship Traffic Services Center, which coordinated the deployment of multiple tugboats, including 'Kurtarma 20', 'Kurtarma 15', and 'Kurtarma 16', as well as a lifeboat named 'Kiyem 6'. These vessels provided timely assistance, towing the Euroleader back to the safety of Şevketiye Anchorage, where it has remained stationary as of April 15, 2026. This series of events illustrates not only the trials faced by the Euroleader but also the resilience and quick response of maritime authorities in the region as they manage the security and safety of shipping routes under threat.
