Hebrides Returns to Service After Repairs and Inspections

The Hebrides, the vital ferry operating on the Uig-Lochmaddy-Tarbert route, has successfully completed essential inspections and repairs to her bow visor, allowing her to return to her normal schedule effective July 3. This series of events began with the discovery of two cracks in the starboard arm of the bow visor, prompting CalMac to temporarily remove the vessel from service from June 30 to July 3 to conduct necessary inspections.

In the days leading up to the ferry's temporary withdrawal, a provisional repair was executed on June 21, enabling limited operations while preparations for a comprehensive assessment were underway. Initially, the Hebrides continued to operate but faced significant restrictions, including the necessity for vehicles, especially those towing caravans and commercial vehicles, to reverse onto and off the vessel. This situation resulted in prolonged turnaround times and service disruptions that thwarted public travel plans.

To mitigate the impacts of the Hebrides' absence, another ferry, the Alfred, was designated to run an amended timetable on the Little Minch route, ensuring some continuity for travelers during the inspection period. However, the amendments also led to the cancellation of several departures, further emphasizing the challenges faced by commuters relying on this vital service.

The recent inspections, which were meticulously conducted over a two-day period by specialized contractors, confirmed that the Hebrides is now fit for service again. What remains is the anticipation of a more extensive repair that is slated for her next annual overhaul in early 2026.
