In a series of distressing events surrounding the cruise ship Rotterdam, the authorities have focused on the well-being of passengers amidst alarming incidents, notably concerning a missing American traveler and a prevalent norovirus outbreak. On November 20, 2023, Ann Evans, a 55-year-old U.S. citizen, disembarked the Rotterdam during a stop in Port St. Maarten on an organized island tour but failed to return. Following an extensive search initiated by the Police Force of Sint Maarten, Ms. Evans was reportedly discovered alive in French Saint Martin over a week later, on November 28. Initially, Evans had departed the bus in Marigot, French Saint Martin, creating concern for her safety, prompting local law enforcement to issue missing person alerts and mobilize tourism police to locate her. It became known that she checked into a hotel using her passport, successfully leading authorities to her whereabouts.

Simultaneously, the Rotterdam has been grappling with another issue, as 89 individuals aboard, including 81 passengers and eight crew members, succumbed to a norovirus outbreak, a scenario that isn’t unfamiliar for the vessel. Just less than a year prior, a similar outbreak had led to 169 reported cases during an earlier journey, raising serious concerns regarding sanitation protocols on board. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the second outbreak was linked to the ship’s extensive passenger and crew capacity, highlighting the persistent risk of gastrointestinal illness in tightly packed environments such as cruise ships. In response to the outbreak, the Holland America Line implemented a series of safety measures, including isolating affected individuals and conducting thorough sanitization protocols once the vessel returned to Fort Lauderdale.
