Health and Safety Incidents Mark Recent Voyages of <a href='/ships/nissos-samos-8712635'>Nissos-Samos</a>

The maritime operations of the passenger ferry Nissos-Samos have been marred by a series of health and safety incidents during its scheduled routes from the port of Piraeus to Chios and Mytilene. Two significant medical emergencies were reported this year, alongside an operational safety issue involving the vessel's water sprinkler system.

On September 11, a tragic event unfolded when the Oinousses Port Authority was notified of a health crisis involving a 73-year-old female passenger. The ship, which was en route to Chios, diverted to the port of Oinousses after it became clear that the passenger required urgent medical attention. Upon arrival, the woman was disembarked and rushed to the Oinousses Multi-Purpose Clinic; sadly, she was pronounced dead shortly after. The subsequent transportation of her body to Chios General Hospital led to a preliminary investigation ordered by the Oinousses Port Station, which has also mandated an autopsy.

Just a few months later, on December 16, another medical emergency occurred onboard the Nissos-Samos. The Captain notified the Port Authority of Chios about a 54-year-old Greek passenger in need of immediate hospital treatment. As the ferry docked in Chios, the passenger was quickly moved to a waiting ambulance and transported to the General Hospital of Chios, highlighting the vessel's commitment to rapid emergency response despite the challenges along its routes.

In addition to health incidents, operational safety was also called into question on April 26, 2026, when the water sprinkler system in the aft passenger area of deck 7 was accidentally activated. This incident was traced back to a broken glass vial on the sprinkler head nozzle. Inspectors from the Local Ship Inspection Unit (TKEP) promptly assessed the situation, confirming that the pressure system was restored to normal functioning after tests yielded satisfactory results. However, the Central Port Authority of Mytilene has launched an investigation into the incident to determine if administrative sanctions are warranted.

The occurrences on Nissos-Samos underscore the inherent risks and challenges faced by passenger ferries operating in busy maritime routes. They also raise questions regarding on-board health safety measures and the efficiency of emergency protocols, drawing attention from both maritime authorities and the traveling public.
