Zaza: From Passenger Ferry to Tragic Fire Incident

Zaza, formerly known as the 'Moby Zaza', has undergone significant transformation in its operational role, now branded as 'World Legacy' and run by World Cruises. Having transitioned to the Loyang Offshore Resupply Base in Singapore after leaving Sembawang on October 7, 2023, the vessel remained docked as of October 17, 2023. This change marks a shift in its function from ferrying passengers to possibly catering to a different clientele, showcasing potential versatility in maritime operations.

However, the vessel's recent history is marred by tragedy. On February 20, 2026, the 'World Legacy' was involved in a devastating incident when a fire broke out in the lounge area of Deck 9 while en route to Singapore, with 271 passengers and 388 crew members on board. Despite the timely intervention by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the unfortunate event led to the death of a 23-year-old Indonesian crew member, whose body was later transferred ashore. He was found collapsed due to cardiopulmonary arrest secondary to asphyxiation, highlighting the severe implications of the fire.

Following the fire, which prompted swift evacuation procedures, the remaining passengers were transported to the HarbourFront Ferry Terminal. Fortunately, no significant injuries were reported among them, although four passengers were taken to the hospital for precautionary assessments. As investigations commenced to determine the fire's cause, a core team of crew members remained aboard the vessel to carry out essential operations and facilitate the necessary safety checks.

In light of these events, the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore established a safety perimeter around the 'World Legacy', advising nearby vessels to maintain a safe distance. This precaution was taken as classification society surveyors boarded to assess the damage and guide preparations for any required repairs before the ship could resume its cruise operations.

While it offers a unique cruising experience with flexible options for passengers, the vessel had already faced prior issues during its operations, including complaints regarding on-board amenities such as water quality and air conditioning performance. These challenges, combined with the tragic fire incident, raise questions about the safety protocols and operational management aboard the 'World Legacy'. As it continues to reside at its offshore base, the maritime community watches closely for developments regarding the repercussions of this accident and the vessel's future in the cruise industry.
