Caledonian-Isles, a vital ferry servicing the Ardrossan to Brodick route, has faced a series of operational challenges but is on the brink of a significant turnaround. After being out of service since January 2024, the vessel returned to North Ayrshire on September 24, prompting hopes of resuming full service within days. Initial sea trials were deemed successful, addressing critical issues such as propeller pitch response instability — a key factor in its maneuverability within harbours. With additional berthing trials underway and crew familiarization scheduled, Caledonian Isles appeared poised for a timely return to its timetabled operations. However, the repair bill, estimated at £12 million, raises questions about fiscal responsibility, with CalMac looking to recoup some costs from Cammell Laird Shipyard, which executed the vessel's initial repairs.
