The French emergency tug Abeille-Normandie has recently played a pivotal role in a series of dramatic rescue operations amid the ongoing migrant crisis in the English Channel. This vessel, known for its robust capabilities, has been at the forefront of multiple missions, responding to the distress calls of migrants navigating perilous waters. On October 17, a significant operation unfolded when the CROSS Gris-Nez initiated a search and rescue mission following reports of a migrant boat departing from the Baie de Somme. The Abeille-Normandie engaged promptly, successfully rescuing 81 individuals who were subsequently disembarked at Boulogne-sur-Mer. This swift response underscored the vessel's critical role in safeguarding lives in hazardous conditions. As the migrant crisis escalated, particularly on November 6, the vessel was again deployed to assist with the increasing number of migrant boat departures. The CROSS Gris-Nez coordinated a massive air and sea operation that involved an extensive range of resources, including the Abeille-Normandie. Reports indicated that 94 individuals were rescued following the sinking of a migrant vessel off Dunkirk, showcasing the ongoing peril migrants face during crossings. In a separate incident on the same day, the Abeille-Normandie and its rigid inflatable boat were dispatched to respond to a migrant boat that had collided with a breakwater near Malo-les-Bains. Although some individuals managed to reach safety without assistance, the tug succeeded in rescuing an injured migrant and facilitating their transfer to rescue services. Most recently, on November 8, the Abeille-Normandie was once again summoned in response to a distress call originating from the Petit-Fort-Philippe area. Leveraging its operational drone for reconnaissance, the vessel assessed the critical situation aboard the distressed boat, ultimately rescuing 36 migrants, two of whom required immediate medical attention. As with previous operations, the survivors were brought to Boulogne-sur-Mer, where they received care from state services.
