Hebrides Faces Challenges Ahead: Technical Issues and Overhaul Plans

The Hebrides, a key ferry operating on the vital Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy route, has recently encountered several technical challenges impacting service efficiency and passenger experience. On January 4, 2025, the vessel suffered a significant issue with its mezzanine decks, which reduced the vehicle capacity on board. CalMac, the operator, ensured that customers affected by this situation were to be directly contacted to manage expectations and travel plans effectively.

As the operator turned its attention to scheduled maintenance, the Hebrides was set to depart for its annual overhaul on February 25, 2025. However, this year’s overhaul is deemed more critical than usual due to essential repairs required for the bow visor and gearbox, necessitating an extended period of maintenance. Originally expected to return to service by April 15, 2025, the overhaul will involve a comprehensive vessel deployment review from CalMac, with an update on service allocations planned for the week of February 2.

The challenges for the Hebrides continued as, on February 10, 2026, another technical issue emerged affecting the operational integrity of the bow visor. This malfunction forced the ferry to operate in a single-ended mode, restricting foot passenger access to the car deck. Additionally, the need for vehicles to turn within the constrained space of the car deck introduced further delays, illustrated by the vessel’s late departure from Uig on February 17, 2026, at 09:55 a.m.
