Abel-Matutes, a prominent ferry serving the Valencia-Palma-Ibiza route, has recently made headlines not only for its operational capabilities but also for the challenges it has faced. In early 2019, the vessel was involved in an allision with the commercial dock of the port of Ibiza during a difficult docking maneuver conditioned by adverse weather, which resulted in a breach in its stern. Just months later, on July 25, 2019, the vessel faced a different kind of emergency when a passenger required urgent medical evacuation due to cardiac issues. The rapid response by Salvamento Marítimo and the deployment of the helicopter Helimer 215 ensured that the passenger received critical care in Valencia's La Fe hospital, showcasing the ferry’s commitment to onboard safety and well-being.

In a significant development for sustainability, the 'Abel-Matutes' marked a milestone in March 2023 when it became the first ferry in the Baleària fleet to undergo liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering at the Port of Barcelona. This critical retrofitting included the installation of an LNG storage tank and an auxiliary LNG-powered Rolls-Royce engine, aiming to reduce the ferry's environmental impact significantly. Baleària anticipates a reduction of approximately 4,000 tonnes in CO2 emissions annually, along with significant cuts in nitrogen and sulfur oxide emissions.
