Future-Proofing the Aeolus: Upgrades and Challenges Ahead

Aeolus, Van Oord's premier offshore installation vessel, is undergoing a significant transformation aimed at enhancing its capabilities in a competitive market. The vessel's upgrade program, contracted to Damen Shiprepair at Schiedam, comes as an essential response to the evolving demands of offshore wind projects. Key modifications include the installation of a new 1,600-tonne Leg Encircling Crane (LEC), which has been constructed by Huisman, a notable specialist in heavy installation equipment. The upgraded LEC boasts nearly double the lifting capacity of the previous 900-tonne crane, positioning Aeolus at the forefront of heavy-lift capabilities in its class. The modifications also encompass increased loading capacity, a new accommodation module complete with a helideck, along with the installation of sponsons, strengthened deck configurations, and enlarged spud cans. These enhancements are critical for Aeolus as it prepares to undertake future projects, including significant offshore wind farms such as Borssele 3 & 4 in the Netherlands and Norther in Belgium. The upgrades commenced in September 2017 and are expected to elevate Aeolus to operational readiness by spring 2018. However, the road to upgrading the Aeolus has not been without challenges. During the drydock period at Damen Shipyard, an extreme storm on January 3, 2017, resulted in a significant incident when a gantry crane collapsed. Remarkably, the crane missed hitting Aeolus, which was undergoing conversion. Although the crane was securely placed, the powerful winds proved too strong, leading to its downed state. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the failure, while salvage operations are anticipated to take several weeks, temporarily affecting the shipyard’s capacity. Despite these challenges, the focus remains on the upgrades that will ensure Aeolus is well-equipped to tackle the increasing scale of offshore wind installations. As Aeolus progresses toward completion, Van Oord’s strategy exemplifies how adaptability and innovation are crucial for success in the rapidly evolving maritime landscape.
