In a significant development for maritime operations, Akranes, a vessel previously owned by Smyril Line, has been sold to Fred Olsen Express. This sale, expected to finalize in June or July in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, marks a pivotal moment for both shipping companies as Smyril Line prepares to expand its fleet with two newbuilds from a Chinese shipyard next year. One of these vessels will take over the role of the Akranes, which is set to be rebranded as 'Breñas Cargo'. Fred Olsen Express plans to deploy the newly acquired ship on critical routes connecting La Palma with Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. This expansion comes on the heels of the company's acquisition of two ships from Finnlines last year, increasing its capacity in the region.

Adding to the drama surrounding the Akranes, the vessel faced a medical emergency on November 10, when the captain issued a distress signal while navigating from Thorshavn to Rotterdam. The vessel was located approximately 140 nautical miles northwest of Orkney when the captain experienced serious cardiac issues. Quick action ensued as the Danish telemedical maritime assistance service intervened, and an evacuation by helicopter was promptly organized. The first officer was able to assume command, ensuring the Akranes successfully reached Rotterdam on November 12.

Smyril Line has not only been occupied with transitioning the Akranes but also has secured an agreement with Bore for the purchase of the BORE BANK, a move that solidifies its presence in the Faroe Islands' maritime landscape. Now acquiring five vessels, Smyril Line is strategically positioning itself for future growth amid a dynamic shipping environment. These developments encapsulate a transformative period for both Smyril Line and Fred Olsen Express, highlighting the intricate interplay of operational challenges and strategic enhancements within the maritime industry.
