Alaska-Ocean: A Vessel's Ongoing Medical Emergencies at Sea

The Alaska-Ocean, a fishing vessel known for its operations along the rugged coastlines of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, has been at the center of multiple maritime medical emergencies over the years. Notably, this vessel has required the assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard on three separate occasions, highlighting the risks faced by crew members in the demanding maritime environment.

On May 19, 2015, the Coast Guard launched a rescue operation 30 miles west of Crescent City, California, to medevac a 33-year-old crew member who had lost consciousness and was experiencing severe chest pain. Shortly before 5 p.m., a call from the vessel's parent company prompted the Pacific Area command center in Alameda to initiate coordination. By 6:17 p.m., an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station North Bend reached the scene, hoisted the crew member, and transported him to the Crescent City Airport for further medical evaluation.

Fast forward to February 21, 2021, and the Alaska-Ocean was again in need of urgent medical assistance, this time approximately 30 miles northeast of Cold Bay, Alaska. A crew member had suffered a crushing injury to the arm, which prompted the vessel to reach out for help through HealthForce Partners. The distress call, received around 7 p.m., led to the deployment of a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew. By 10:30 p.m., the injured crew member was hoisted and flown to the local medical clinic, ultimately awaiting transportation to Anchorage for more comprehensive care.

Most recently, the Alaska-Ocean made headlines again on October 18, 2019, when a 28-year-old crew member encountered chest pains and seasickness about 15 miles west of Coos Bay, Oregon. The Coast Guard was notified at 3:15 a.m., and communication was established with the fishing vessel to monitor the crew member's condition. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was dispatched and arrived at the scene by 9 a.m., executing a successful hoist operation to bring the distressed individual back to base for medical treatment.

These incidents underscore not only the inherent dangers associated with life at sea but also the rapid response abilities of the Coast Guard. The Alaska-Ocean serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and risks faced by maritime professionals every day.
