The Rise and Recovery of the Algoma-Conveyor: A Maritime Journey

The maritime world has witnessed a dramatic series of events surrounding the vessel Algoma-Conveyor, a Seawaymax Equinox Class 740’ self-unloading dry-bulk carrier operated by Algoma Central Corporation. Originally embarking on a journey from its construction yard in China's Yangtze River to its new home in Canada, the vessel faced an unexpected challenge in March 2023.After starting its delivery voyage from China on February 16, 2019, and navigating through various oceans and canals, the Algoma-Conveyor was scheduled to arrive in Canada early April. However, on March 19, while transporting a cargo of salt to the Port of Green Bay, Wisconsin, the vessel lost propulsion and drifted outside the navigational channel, ultimately running aground in the Bay of Green Bay.The U.S. Coast Guard quickly initiated operations to refloat the stricken vessel. The challenges were compounded by the need to lighten the ship's load. The vessel was carrying approximately 3,000 metric tons of cargo at the time it grounded. Consequently, lightering operations commenced on March 23, as crews worked diligently to remove a portion of the cargo to facilitate the vessel's safe return to navigation.By March 26, after the lightering process and coordinated efforts from three tugboats, the Algoma-Conveyor was successfully refloated and managed to navigate back into the port under its own power, marking a triumphant end to its brief ordeal.This incident underscores the resilience and adaptability of maritime operations, as well as the importance of effective emergency response measures. The Algoma-Conveyor, now free, is set to continue its journey towards Canada, reinforcing Algoma’s commitment to maintaining reliable marine transportation services.
