On February 27, 2023, during routine winter maintenance at Port Colborne, Ontario, a fire broke out in the vessel's engine room. Fortunately, the crew had disembarked safely, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters promptly responded to the incident, finding heavy smoke in the engine room but were aided by the ship’s own fire suppression system, which had activated effectively. Efforts involved using an aerial ladder for access to the stern while preparing a water supply from the canal. By around 10:30 a.m., the air was beginning to clear, highlighting the effective response from local firefighting units. The vessel had been tied up in Port Colborne for winter lay-up since early January, optimizing maintenance schedules and minimizing operational disruptions during this critical period.

In a contrasting incident, on October 26, 2023, the Algoma-Discovery encountered mechanical challenges while navigating the Beauharnois Lock 4 in Quebec. The vessel, travelling downbound, struck the ship arrestor, resulting in infrastructural damages that necessitated the lock's closure. This incident compounded delays for several vessels, including the newly launched Wagenborg ship Exeborg, waiting on either side of the Beauharnois Canal. The high winds and adverse weather conditions further complicated recovery operations, with cranes and repair teams delayed in their response. As of late October 28, vessels remained at a standstill, underscoring the unpredictable elements of shipping during the colder months.

The Algoma-Discovery has a history of fire-related incidents, further emphasizing the importance of safety protocols in maritime operations. A notable previous event occurred on May 1, 2012, when a fire erupted in the cargo hold while the vessel was docked at Pier 22 in Hamilton, Ontario. This incident similarly began in a service tunnel believed to be electrical in nature and took firefighters approximately two hours to bring under control. Luckily, the ship was in ballast at the time, mitigating further risks.
