Ali-M Bounces Back: A Look at the Recent Grounding and Refloating Incident

The bulk carrier Ali-M has had a tumultuous few days, culminating in a successful refloat after a grounding incident off the coast of Igoumenitsa, Greece. The vessel ran aground on October 22 at approximately 0700 UTC while navigating its approach to the busy port, reportedly having to divert from its intended course to yield to ferries in distress. This maneuver led it into shallower waters and ultimately resulted in the grounding.

For nearly five days, the Ali-M remained aground, and while it was anchored near the grounding site, the situation looked increasingly precarious. By October 24, port traffic control was cited as responsible for the incident, as the vessel had to make the evasive maneuver that led it into the sandy shallows. During this period, the vessel was under constant observation, and although the Greek Coast Guard detained the Ali-M for a survey and investigation, no leaks or other environmental concerns were reported.

On October 27, optimism returned when the bulk carrier was successfully refloated with the assistance of a tug. The refloat operation took place early in the morning, with the vessel then sailing under its own power to an anchorage at Plataria Bay, where it now remains at anchor. Currently, the crew is conducting damage assessments to determine the integrity of the hull and systems following the incident.
