Challenges and Incidents Surrounding the Bulk Carrier Al-Saad

On August 22, 2022, the vessel experienced a significant bunker oil spill while moored at the port of Monfalcone. This unfortunate event occurred during the critical bunkering phase when the carrier, arriving from Paradip via Suez, reportedly lost a considerable amount of fuel into the surrounding waters. Preliminary investigations have yet to definitively identify the cause, although suspicions of human error were raised. The spill affected a notable stretch of the quay and prompted immediate action from local authorities, including a ban on swimming at the nearby Marina Julia beach due to oil contamination. On September 18, 2016, the U.S. Coast Guard was alerted to the disappearance of Linda and Nathan Carman after their fishing vessel failed to return to shore. Despite immense search efforts spanning over 62,000 square nautical miles, the search was suspended after several days without finding the pair. Miraculously, on September 25, Nathan was found alive aboard a freighter, the "Orient Lucky," after spending a week adrift in a life raft—a testament to endurance at sea but also a stark reminder of the hazards maritime activities pose.
