Navigating Challenges: The Dual Legacy of the Amazoneborg

The maritime world has seen its share of highlights and challenges, and the Amazoneborg stands out as a vessel that embodies both. Recently, the vessel made headlines as it delivered its winter shipment of Swedish Steel products to the Port of Wilmington, Delaware. On December 10, 2018, the geared bulker, Amazoneborg, arrived with over 11,600 tons of high-quality steel plate and coils. Marking the 13th consecutive season of operations for SSAB/Swedish Steel through Wilmington, this shipment is crucial for maintaining a steady supply to Midwestern customers, especially during the winter months when Great Lakes ports are closed for navigation. During this period from December through March, shipments are regularly redirected through the Port, exemplifying the logistical importance of the Amazoneborg in facilitating trade.

However, the vessel's journey is not without its darker moments. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has published a report regarding the tragic death of a crew member on board the Amazoneborg. On September 27, 2017, the third officer of the vessel was lost, spurring an investigation that highlighted the inherent risks of maritime operations.

Most recently, on September 30, 2023, the TSB was once again involved with the Amazoneborg as they launched a search operation for a missing crew member who fell overboard. The vessel had just departed Trois-Rivières, Québec, en route to Pori, when the incident occurred. Efforts were rapidly mobilized to locate the missing 23-year-old crew member, demonstrating the ongoing commitment to maritime safety and the well-being of those at sea.
