Troubles on the High Seas: The Tale of the Amber-Light

In a maritime incident that captured attention, the freighter Amber-Light, originally enroute from Flushing to Grundartangi while carrying a substantial cargo of 3,954 tons of coal, experienced a critical failure. The vessel lost engine power due to an electrical malfunction in its generator at 58°52'28.8"N 004°13'48.6"W, approximately 29.3 miles northwest of Dunnet Head. This event unfolded on November 4, 2019, leading to a swift response coordinated by the HM Coastguard.

The emergency response involved the deployment of the Coastguard emergency tug, 'Ievoli Black', which arrived on-site in the early morning hours to assist the beleaguered vessel. Initially, the master of the Amber-Light assessed the situation and anticipated that the crew could rectify the problem without external help. However, as a precaution, the 'Ievoli Black' remained nearby.

On November 5, the tug began towing the Amber-Light towards Kirkwall, with an estimated time of arrival set for 10 a.m. that day. The anticipated journey was not without its challenges; both ships moved at a speed of roughly 4.3 knots through the bitterly cold waters of the Pentland Firth. As they approached the bight of Scapa Flow, additional tugs, namely the ‘Erlend’ and ‘Strathdee’, were summoned to facilitate the final approach to Kirkwall.

By midday on November 5, the Amber-Light successfully berthed at the jetty in Kirkwall. Following a brief layover, the vessel resumed its voyage on the evening of November 6, regaining momentum with a new estimated time of arrival at Grundartangi, projected for November 9, at 8 p.m. This incident not only underscores the inherent challenges faced by maritime operators but also highlights the efficiency of emergency services in mitigating risks at sea.
