Amman, a 1995-built ferry operated by Arab Bridge Maritime, has recently made headlines as it embarks on a new charter with Baleària, a prominent ferry operator based in Denia. Previously, the Amman had been chartered by Inter Shipping from 2013 to 2017, primarily for service on the busy Algeciras-Tangier Med route, which led many to speculate about a potential return to that path after its recent acquisition. In a contrasting chapter of its history, the Amman experienced a harrowing incident in March 2012 when it caught fire while navigating the Red Sea. The vessel, en route from the Jordanian port of Aqaba to Egypt’s Nuweiba, had 689 passengers on board at the time. Thankfully, the crew managed to extinguish the blaze, which was reported to have originated in the kitchen, likely due to an electrical fault. The quick response ensured that there were no injuries reported, despite the vessel carrying vehicles including 46 cars, 20 trucks, and five buses.
