Ampere Faces Multiple Challenges on Lavik-Oppedal Route

Ampere, the iconic ferry operating between Lavik and Oppedal on the E39 route, has faced a series of operational challenges over the past several years, underlining the complexities involved in maritime transportation. Acknowledged for its critical role in connecting communities, the ferry's service was notably disrupted in early 2020 due to concerns over coronavirus infection. Following a positive test from a crew member, the ferry was temporarily taken out of service on March 12, prompting disinfection protocols and consultations with health authorities to ascertain when the crew could return to duty safely.

Prior to this public health scare, Ampere experienced significant technical difficulties. On January 22, 2019, the vessel suffered propulsion issues with one of its propellers after arriving from Oppedal. Unable to berth in Lavik, the ferry drifted for approximately thirty minutes before receiving assistance from the ferry Oppedal. Once docked, it became evident that an electrical component failure had rendered one end of the vessel's propulsion system inoperative, leading to its withdrawal from service until repairs could be completed and a replacement ferry, Stavanger, was called in for operations.

Earlier, on May 31, 2018, Ampere had already begun showing signs of operational strain when its service was temporarily reduced due to a cooling system malfunction affecting one of its engines. This incident followed a prior issue with the battery system, which had only recently been resolved by May 28.

These incidents collectively highlight the importance of maintenance and health protocols in ensuring the safety and reliability of ferry services. As Ampere strives to navigate these challenges, the response from operators and health authorities will be crucial in maintaining public confidence and ensuring uninterrupted service on this vital transportation route.
