Troubled Waters: The Trials of the Andreas-Kalvos

The Andreas-Kalvos has recently faced a series of incidents that raise questions about its operational reliability and safety protocols. On November 17, 2024, the vessel, operating the route from Patras to Sami, experienced an allision with the quay during its mooring process in the port of Sami, Kefalonia. Carrying 157 passengers, 33 crew members, and a freight load of 32 cars, three trucks, and three buses, the ship sustained damage to its starboard side stern. Fortunately, all passengers disembarked safely, with no reported injuries or marine pollution. Authorities acted by prohibiting the vessel from sailing until necessary repairs and a certificate of seaworthiness were secured. Passengers headed for Ithaca were provided alternate transport by the owner company. Prior to the allision, the Andreas-Kalvos encountered another incident on November 8, 2022. While sailing from Sami to Patras, a 37-year-old man was injured onboard and required immediate first aid from the crew and a private doctor available on the ship. After arriving in Patras, he was taken to the local hospital for further medical care, prompting a preliminary investigation by the Central Port Authority of Patras. Adding to the vessel's challenges, a mechanical failure occurred on May 3, 2023, as the Andreas-Kalvos was shifting berths within the northern port of Patras. The failure of the starboard side main engine barred the ferry from departing until a thorough inspection was conducted and a class maintenance certificate was presented. This incident highlighted the ongoing engineering issues faced by the vessel and underscores the importance of robust maintenance practices. These recent challenges suggest a pressing need for enhanced safety measures and rigorous maintenance checks on the Andreas-Kalvos to ensure both passenger safety and operational efficiency in its future journeys.
