Navigating Challenges: The Saga of the Anglian-Lady and the PML 2501 Barge

The maritime journey of the Anglian-Lady has been marked by a series of significant incidents, especially concerning its towing of the barge PML 2501. On June 9, 2020, this barge, while under tow in the lower St. Marys River, suffered a grounding incident near Sweets Point. The barge was carrying a precarious cargo—3,622 metric tons of coal tar and approximately 6,340 gallons of diesel fuel—which raised immediate concerns over potential environmental hazards. The US Coast Guard swiftly responded, establishing a safety zone around the vessel and dispatching marine casualty investigators and pollution responders to assess the situation. Fortunately, after thorough evaluations, no pollution was reported despite the barge taking on water in one of its ballast tanks. The vessel maintained stability, and efforts were directed towards developing a salvage plan to facilitate the barge's safe recovery.

Following this event, the Anglian-Lady played a crucial role in the barge's successful refloating operation, which culminated in a transit back to Sault Ste. Marie on June 14, 2020. After comprehensive dive surveys and stability assessments, the barge was towed safely, and the salvage operations, coordinated with Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard, were deemed successful with no pollution incidents recorded in the process.

Earlier, on April 6, 2021, the Anglian-Lady was involved in a collision while docked, where the tanker Algocanada collided with both the Anglian-Lady and the PML Ironmaster. Fortunately, this incident resulted in only minor damages to the involved vessels. Following the accident, the Algocanada departed Sault Ste. Marie on April 7, heading to Nanticoke, while the Anglian-Lady continued its operations and eventually berthed in Burns Harbor later on.
