Balmoral Faces Health Challenges: Outbreaks and Medevac Incidents Highlight Risks at Sea

The cruise ship Balmoral has recently been in the spotlight for multiple health-related incidents that have raised concerns among its passengers and the broader maritime community. Most notably, a diarrhoea outbreak onboard prompted the cancellation of a sailing from Southampton to Newcastle, which Fred Olsen Cruises had been offering at a discounted rate of £99. This decision came after a two-week voyage that took passengers to Norway to witness the Northern Lights, during which numerous cases of gastro-related illnesses were reported among those onboard. The decision to cancel the upcoming sailing, originally scheduled for the evening of February 28, 2024, was made at lunchtime that same day to allow for a thorough deep cleaning of the ship to prevent further spread of illness.

In addition to the outbreak, the Balmoral has been involved in two separate medical emergencies in the past year. On November 1, 2022, off the coast of Cherbourg, a passenger required urgent medical attention and was successfully medevaced by a French Navy helicopter. The captain of the vessel requested assistance from the CROSS Jobourg at around 1 p.m., resulting in the patient being hoisted aboard the Caiman helicopter for expedited transportation to a hospital in Cherbourg. The ship was able to berth in Rouen the following day.

Prior to that incident, on October 18, 2022, another medical emergency occurred when a 77-year-old German tourist collapsed while the Balmoral was en route to Mahón, south of Sardinia. In this case, an Italian Navy helicopter was dispatched to medevac the woman, who was subsequently transported to a hospital in Cagliari. These incidents underscore the inherent risks associated with maritime travel and the importance of having effective medical response plans in place.

As the Balmoral continues its operations amid these health challenges, both the cruise line and passengers are reminded of the necessity for vigilance and preparation when embarking on sea voyages.
