Baltic-Performer Faces Challenges: From Unpaid Debts to Cargo Crisis

The Baltic-Performer has recently been at the center of a series of dramatic events that highlight the challenges faced by maritime operators. On May 28, 2019, the vessel was arrested in Campana due to a court ruling related to unpaid debt claims lodged by the San Pedro Port company against its managing entity, Baltic Shipping. This legal complication arose after the vessel's master had requested additional workforce and loading hours following delays caused by rain and a malfunctioning crane in July 2018. Although the ship itself was not directly involved in the failure to make a $60,000 payment for those services, it was nevertheless affected as the arrest pertained to a sister ship. The Baltic-Performer remains under detention until the debts and associated court expenses are resolved or a financial deposit is secured.

In another incident, the Baltic-Performer faced difficulties in the Bay of Biscay on October 21, 2017, when severe weather caused part of its cargo—6,120 tons of vegetables arranged on pallets—to shift. This unfortunate event resulted in a 15-degree list to port, prompting the vessel to seek assistance. The emergency tug "Abeille Bourbon" was dispatched and managed to escort the reefer to safety in Brest after setting out on the evening of October 22. Such adverse conditions highlight not only the risks associated with transporting sensitive cargo but also the logistical complexities involved in ensuring safe voyages.

Despite these challenges, the Baltic-Performer demonstrated resilience by setting sail from the port of Brest on October 27, 2023, after the cargo was re-secured. The vessel was en route to Dakar with an estimated arrival on November 2, showcasing its ability to recover from setbacks.
