The Struggles and Resilience of the Baltiysk Ferry

The Baltiysk ferry has seen a series of significant challenges over the past years that have tested her operational stability. Recently, the vessel was detained by Port Authorities in Ust-Luga on June 9, 2018, due to outstanding debts related to crew wages. This incident was a result of the operator, Tans Exim Ltd., failing to address previous warnings about the payment issues. The situation worsened, leading to not only the detention of the Baltiysk but also its sister ferry, the Petersburg, which faced similar circumstances in Tallinn. The suspension of services for both ferries left many passengers and cargo transporters in a difficult position before the debts were eventually resolved. On June 16, 2018, following the payment of the outstanding debts, the Baltiysk was released and re-entered service on the Baltiysk-Ust-Luga route.

Adding to the challenges faced by the Baltiysk, on December 27, 2016, the ferry encountered a serious incident at Baltiysk Anchorage. While anchored and waiting for pilotage due to rough weather, the Baltiysk developed a dangerous starboard list as a result of a cargo shift. This movement caused two oil cars loaded with fuel to derail on the upper deck, prompting a swift response from the crew as they sought to secure the situation. In an effort to protect against further mishaps, the vessel left the anchorage and headed to sea to weather the storm, later docking safely in Baltiysk on December 29.

These incidents highlight the operational vulnerabilities of the Baltiysk, reflective of broader issues within maritime transport relating to crew welfare and cargo management. Moving forward, it remains critical for operators to ensure timely payments to crew and effective cargo loading practices to mitigate the risks faced by vessels like the Baltiysk.
