Baronessen Navigates Challenges: From Groundings to Repairs in Oslo

Baronessen, the prominent Nesodden ferry, has faced a series of incidents over the past few years that have tested both her resilience and the operational protocols of her operator, Norled. The most recent event occurred on January 13, 2025, when the ferry ran aground at Lysaker Pier while en route from Nesoddtangen, carrying nearly 100 passengers. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. After grounding, Baronessen managed to refloat on her own and dock safely, albeit with some damages. Early investigations indicated a possible blackout as the cause, prompting Norled to initiate a full inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, a backup vessel was deployed to ensure continued service on the route between Nesodden and Lysaker during this period.

Just a few days later, on January 15, the Baronessen was transported from Oslo to a shipyard in Horten for repairs. The operator had initially speculated that a power loss led to the grounding, although they acknowledged that it was premature to draw conclusions about the accident. Repairs were completed ahead of schedule, with the ferry set to return to operational status by January 21, 2025. Looking back, this incident isn't the first that Baronessen has encountered. In June 2017, the vessel was involved in a collision with the speedboat 'Huldra' at Oslo's Aker Bridge. At that time, while no passengers were aboard, the vessel incurred minor material damage and was temporarily sidelined, necessitating reliance on replacement vessels such as the catamaran ferry 'Tidevind.'
