Trouble at Sea: The Ongoing Challenges of the Baroy Ferry

The Baroy, a ferry operated by Torghatten Nord, has faced a string of incidents over recent years, highlighting ongoing technical and operational challenges. Most recently, on November 14, 2024, the vessel experienced a fire while docked at Bognes in Hamarøy municipality. Emergency services promptly responded to the scene, managing to control the fire swiftly. Preliminary reports suggest that the fire was caused by an explosion in a charging unit on board, although thankfully, the fire was contained and did not involve the battery pack. No passengers were aboard, but one crew member was treated for smoke inhalation while all others were accounted for. The police have begun an investigation into the incident.

This was not the first time that issues have sidelined the Baroy. On July 13, 2017, it was reported that the ferry's technical problems forced it to be withdrawn from the Bognes-Lødingen route. Passengers relying on the service experienced significant disruptions, with several scheduled departures canceled and replaced by an alternate ferry, the Hamarøy. The duration of the vessel's repair was uncertain, adding to the frustration of those affected.

Furthermore, earlier on July 7, 2014, the Baroy encountered a breakdown just before arriving at Bognes, leaving passengers stranded temporarily as it anchored 100 meters off the port. Assistance was summoned, and the situation was resolved with the ferry eventually towed back to Lødingen by rescue vessels. These incidents collectively shine a light on the operational vulnerabilities that the Baroy faces, raising concerns about reliability and safety for future voyages in Northern Norway's waters.
