Beluga-Ace: A Beacon of Innovation and Humanitarian Action at Sea

The Beluga-Ace, operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), has made headlines not only for its technological advancements but also for its humanitarian efforts. On August 1, 2020, while en route from Wellington to Hitachinaka, the vessel's crew demonstrated exceptional courage and compassion by rescuing 15 fishermen from a distressed fishing boat in the North Pacific Ocean. Spotting smoke at approximately 6:20 a.m., the crew of the Beluga-Ace rendered assistance, ultimately transferring the survivors to their sister ship by 4:10 p.m. the next day, adhering to safety protocols and ensuring their welfare throughout the ordeal.

In addition to its commendable actions at sea, the Beluga-Ace exemplifies cutting-edge design and innovation in the maritime industry. Recently recognized as part of MOL's next-generation FLEXIE series, the vessel was awarded the prestigious Good Design Award in 2018. The ship was praised for its innovative re-architecture, which includes flexibly liftable decks that allow for the efficient loading of vehicles of varying heights. This improvement has resulted in a 6.25% increase in loading efficiency compared to conventional car carriers, thus meeting new transport demands while enhancing safety through the integration of augmented reality (AR) and IoT technology.

Further showcasing its commitment to community engagement, MOL hosted a tour of the Beluga-Ace for around 360 students and their families on Marine Day, July 16. This event allowed participants to explore the ship’s impressive facilities, including the engine room, where they could witness the power generator in action, as well as the high-precision vehicle loading demonstrations. Individuals were also given the chance to interact with nautical instruments on the bridge and take part in hands-on craft workshops, fostering a deeper understanding of maritime operations among the youth.

Through its dual role as a state-of-the-art car carrier and a vessel dedicated to humanitarian efforts, the Beluga-Ace stands as a testament to the evolving nature of the shipping industry, merging innovative design with a strong commitment to community and safety.
