Bencomo-Express: A Beacon of Hope Amid Migrant Crises and Maritime Challenges

The Bencomo-Express, a prominent ferry operating between Los Cristianos and Santa Cruz de Palma, has recently played a pivotal role in assisting maritime rescue operations in the Canary Islands, highlighting the vessel's capabilities and growing importance in humanitarian efforts. In a notable incident on January 7, 2024, the ferry informed the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Tenerife of a canoe sighting in the waters near Los Cristianos. This timely notification led to the successful rescue of 39 sub-Saharan migrants, all men, who were found stranded aboard an unsteered canoe. The 'Salvamar Alpheratz', dispatched to attend the situation, towed the empty canoe back to the port, showcasing the effective collaboration between the Bencomo-Express and rescue agencies.

The involvement of the Bencomo-Express in migrant rescues is not an isolated incident. Earlier, on August 11, 2023, the ferry's vigilant crew identified another precarious boat carrying approximately 60 migrants. Located just seven nautical miles from Los Cristianos, the ship's quick action facilitated another successful rescue operation as the 'Salvamar Alpheratz' was called to escort the migrants safely to shore.

However, the Bencomo-Express is not without its challenges. Back in February 2020, the vessel was involved in a collision with the 'Vólcan de Taburiente' while entering Santa Cruz's port due to adverse weather conditions. Despite the stormy winds that pushed the Bencomo-Express against its larger counterpart, the damages were minor, allowing both vessels to continue their operations without major disruption.

As the Bencomo-Express continues its service, the combination of its operational resilience and responsive assistance in migrant rescues underscores the critical role it plays not just in transportation, but also in addressing pressing humanitarian crises in the region.
