Ben-My-Chree Faces Challenges Amid Upgrade Costs and Operational Trials

The Ben-My-Chree, a key ferry in the Isle of Man's transportation network, is currently at a crossroads as it confronts significant financial and operational hurdles. Treasury Minister Alex Allinson MHK recently disclosed that modernizing the vessel would entail an £18 million expense, which would not be recouped throughout its remaining operational lifespan. This hefty investment arises from various outdated systems that have rendered the Ben-My-Chree less efficient and reliable. Among the proposed upgrades are an overhaul of the propulsion system, which alone would cost between £8 million and £10 million, alongside extensive renovations of passenger accommodations amounting to around £3.5 million. Further expenses include replacing a dated lift, upgrading life-saving equipment, and updating control systems, pushing the total upgrade costs to a figure that far exceeds the vessel’s potential end value.

Compounding these financial concerns, the vessel recently returned to Douglas following unsuccessful berthing trials at Scottish ports, aimed at assessing its viability for service on the Arran route with operator CalMac. While it managed to berth at Brodick, it did so at the limits of its operational safety, necessitating favorable weather conditions for subsequent maneuvers. Consequently, CalMac opted against chartering the Ben-My-Chree amidst ongoing pressures on its fleet, particularly following the inoperative status of the Caledonian Isles since February.

The operational strain is further intensified as the Ben-My-Chree prepares for a scheduled yard call starting October 30, 2022, rendering it unavailable for up to six days. During this period, the Manannan will serve as the primary ferry connecting Douglas and Heysham, while freight duties will be taken over by the Arrow. The planned repairs underscore the ongoing demands placed on the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and highlight the necessity for strategic decisions regarding its aging fleet. With the Ben-My-Chree facing not just upgrade costs but also operational challenges, the future of this vessel remains uncertain.
