Challenges Mount for the Bitten-Clausen: Vandalism and Engine Troubles Threaten Operations

Bitten-Clausen, the ferry that connects Hardeshøj and Ballebro, has faced significant challenges that have affected its operation and reputation over the past year. On December 16, 2018, the vessel was sidelined in Hardeshoj due to a troubling case of vandalism. Burglars broke into the ferry, causing extensive damage that rendered it unfit for service. The vandalism resulted in four broken windows, the theft of six emergency flares, and two fire hose pipes, as well as a broken fire door that had to be repaired before the Danish Maritime Authority would grant permission for the ferry to resume operations. Initial hopes were to have the ferry operational again by December 18, but the extent of the damage necessitated more extensive repairs, leaving passengers seeking alternative routes. The economic loss was compounded by the theft, which totaled a mere 600 Danish kroner in cash, a stark contrast to the safety risks involved in the vandalism.

Adding to the challenges faced by Bitten-Clausen, earlier disruptions occurred due to engine damage. Since May 24, 2018, the vessel had been forced to remain in Ballebro's port due to a crankshaft issue in its front engine. Technicians were called in, and repairs commenced on May 26. Meanwhile, local commuters and tourists, particularly those headed to Danfoss in Nordborg or enjoying the summer scenic route, had to find alternate transportation, leading to a longer journey over the Alssund Bridge. During the busy summer season, Bitten-Clausen typically transports around 110,000 passengers annually, with over 500 daily in peak times, making the operational downtime a significant concern for many. Furthermore, the timing of the engine issues jeopardized popular community events like the annual Als Riverboat trip, which transforms the ferry into a party ship sailing through the scenic Als Sound.
