Challenges and Recoveries: The Story of the Bjornsund Ferry

Bjornsund, a ferry operating on the Seivika-Tømmervåg route, has faced multiple challenges over the years that have tested its reliability and impacted ferry services. One of the most significant incidents occurred on the night of July 24, 2018, when a technical failure in its propulsion system led to an allision with the ferry quay at Tømmervåg. The vessel collided with the quay at a speed of approximately four knots, causing damage to both the quay's ramp cylinder and the ferry's bow. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident resulted in the suspension of service and the mobilization of the reserve ferry, Tingvoll, as operations were impacted for several days. Repairs were promptly initiated at Aibel in Kristiansund, allowing the ferry to return to service shortly thereafter.

Prior to the allision, Bjornsund experienced technical challenges that had sidelined it on two separate occasions in recent years. On August 19, 2014, the ferry was taken out of service in the morning due to technical problems, forcing the route to operate with only one functioning ferry. Although initial forecasts predicted a swift resolution, repairs extended well into the night, causing further disruption to travelers relying on this vital transportation link.

Earlier, on October 31, 2011, service was once again suspended due to an oil leak that emerged at 2:30 p.m. The ferry remained at the quay until the necessary repairs were completed by 6 p.m., allowing it to resume operations the same day.

The incidents surrounding the Bjornsund highlight the ongoing maintenance and technical vigilance required in maritime operations. Despite facing various issues, the ferry has shown resilience in returning to service quickly, reflecting the commitment to connectivity that is critical for the communities around Seivika and Tømmervåg.
