Blue-Marlin: From Pirate Battles to Floating Drydock Deliveries

On May 5, 2019, the Blue-Marlin fell victim to an audacious pirate attack while sailing in the Gulf of Guinea, shortly after departing from Luba port. Armed with firearms, a group of seven pirates stormed the vessel, demanding money and valuables from the crew, who wisely took refuge in the ship's citadel. Their distress signal activated an immediate response from the Spanish Navy, which dispatched a boarding team aboard the patrol vessel 'Serviola - P 71' to address the crisis. After a brief but tense standoff, the crew was freed, unharmed, although the pirates inflicted significant damage, rendering the Blue-Marlin temporarily unsailable.

Amidst this narrative of high-seas drama, another incident involved the wrongful detention of the Nigerian-flagged tug 'Charis,' implicated on the grounds of being associated with the attack on the Blue-Marlin. Following a distress call for help during the attempted hijacking, the 'Charis' found itself mistakenly accused and detained by authorities in Equatorial Guinea. After 15 days of international negotiations led by Nigerian officials, the crew was released, clarifying their non-involvement in the piracy incidents.

In a stark contrast to the piracy narrative, the Blue-Marlin also recently played a pivotal role in delivering the soon-to-be largest floating drydock in the United States, named the 'Vigorous,' to Portland, Oregon. This colossal structure, measuring 960 feet in length and weighing 80,000 tons, is designed to support the US Navy and service a variety of vessels.
